Discover Your True Emotional Quotient with e-Factor®

Boosting your Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a key part of personal and work growth. Think about being the person who always knows the right response, stays cool under pressure, and brings valuable insights to social situations – that’s what strong EI looks like.

Studies show that folks with good EI do well at work and in their relationships. EI isn’t just for the office, it’s important anytime you need to manage emotions and communicate effectively. Whether you’re aiming to climb the career ladder or improve your personal connections, working on your EI could be your ticket to success.

We’re excited to introduce e-Factor, a brand-new tool that helps you better understand your EI strengths and weaknesses.

In just about an hour online, e-Factor® gives you an ‘EQ’ score that’s as trustworthy and unbiased as an IQ test. It uses a method called Situation Judgement Test (SJT), along with data from your own and others’ reports about you, to make sure we measure your real-world EI performance accurately. The results show 12 abilities grouped in four sections, helping you understand your EI skills, celebrate your strengths, and identify areas you might want to work on.

e-Factor: The Most Reliable Measure of Your Emotional Intelligence

By harnessing the power of triangulation e-Factor delivers an incredibly accurate and reliable insight into your emotional intelligence competencies. Triangulation, often used within scientific research, involves using multiple methods or data sources to have confidence in the outputs. In the case of e-Factor, triangulation is used to reveal a more complete and robust picture of an individual’s Emotional Intelligence.

  • Self-Report: Self-report measures are an introspective assessment of one’s emotional Intelligence. While self-perceptions can sometimes be biased, or limited by low self-awareness, they provide a crucial insight into an individual’s self-concept and perceived strengths and weaknesses.
  • 360-degree report: This aspect gathers perspectives from different individuals in an individual’s life, such as managers, peers, and subordinates in a workplace context, or friends and family in a more personal setting. This feedback can help identify blind spots and provide a more balanced view of an individual’s Emotional Intelligence.
  • Objective situational judgement test: This unique component tests how an individual navigates various social and emotional scenarios, assessing their knowledge, understanding, skills, and abilities to recognise, understand, and manage emotions in real-life circumstances. It adds another layer of rigour to the overall evaluation.

Unlike other EI tools that may have a specific target audience, our emotional intelligence test is a generic tool that takes into account both work and personal life contexts. This approach enables the test to provide a comprehensive understanding of the test-takers emotional intelligence in various aspects of their life.

Moreover, it’s essential to note that we acknowledge that individuals with high emotional intelligence may not necessarily prioritize “well-being” or “pro-social” goals in their lives. For instance, athletes or individuals in competitive industries may prioritize other values, such as competitiveness or winning. Therefore, we decided not to tailor the tool towards any particular profession or values to avoid introducing cultural bias.

Ultimately, our emotional intelligence test is designed for everyone and aims to provide a fair and unbiased assessment of an individual’s emotional intelligence, much like IQ tests.

Here is a diverse list of just some of the fields e-Factor clients work within:

Emotional Intelligence is “The ability to perceive, understand and influence our own and others’ emotions, across a range of contexts, to guide our current thinking and actions, to help us to achieve our goals”. (Lansley 2020)

The e-Factor Competences

The e-Factor® Competences is an Emotional Intelligence (EI) model emphasising abilities conforming to our definition of EI: “the ability to perceive, understand and influence our own and others’ emotions, across a range of contexts, to guide our current thinking and actions, to help us to achieve our goals”. (Lansley 2020).

This model, designed to be universally applicable, disregards specific roles or jobs. It promotes pro-social applications, maintaining neutrality about personal goal values.

Derived from substantial empirical research, the model measures performance under diverse pressure levels, demonstrating the significance of emotional intelligence even under high-stakes circumstances. After rigorous refinement, 12 abilities organised into four quadrants have emerged as central themes. These 12 Competencies are the abilities assessed by the e-Factor® tool and are listed below:

The EmotionIntell® Model

1. Self-Awareness

Self-Awareness is about having the ability to:

  • Perceive and label own emotions as they occur.
  • Identify and anticipate triggers for own emotions.
  • Appraise appropriateness of initial emotional reactions to goals.

2. Self-Management

Self-Management is about having the ability to:

  • Interrupt initial thoughts and own reactions.
  • Adopt strategies to manage own emotions when appropriate.
  • Initiate and regulate emotions to support goals.

3. Social-Awareness

Social-Awareness covers the abilities to:

  • Read others communication signals across multiple channels.
  • Hypothesise about others’ emotions.
  • Appraise options for own actions relative to goals.

4. Social-Interaction

The Social-Interaction quadrant covers your abilities to:

  • Engage others appropriate to goals.
  • Interact appropriately to analyse and understand others.
  • Influence others towards goals.

The e-Factor Scoring

The e-Factor® score is generated by an algorithm that factors in all three tools:

  • 70% of KUSA
  • 20% of the average 360
  • 10% of Self judgement variance from KUSA.

The e-Factor® is scored out of 200 with the following band descriptors:

FAQ's

The Emotional Intelligence Academy aims to establish itself as the benchmark for Emotional Intelligence (EI) by providing a comprehensive framework for researchers and organisations worldwide to develop and evaluate EI. Our goal is to create an EI IQ equivalent that will serve as a gold standard for measuring and improving emotional intelligence skills. By doing so, we aim to facilitate the development of individuals and organisations who seek to enhance their emotional intelligence capabilities.

No, it is not. Unlike other EI tools that may have a specific target audience, our emotional intelligence test is a generic tool that takes into account both work and personal life contexts. This approach enables the test to provide a comprehensive understanding of the test-taker’s emotional intelligence in various aspects of their life.

Ultimately, our emotional intelligence test aims to provide a fair and unbiased assessment of an individual’s emotional intelligence, much like IQ tests.

The e-Factor® assessment tool comprises three parts, representing an objective assessment of your Emotional Intelligence capabilities, your self-awareness of your abilities, and perspectives from others who experience your EI in life and work.

At EIA, we use an algorithm that heavily weighs the objective assessment while relying on the reliability that triangulated data sources provide. Therefore, it is not permissible to use only one part of the e-Factor® assessment tool. The triangulation of these three data sources provides a comprehensive and accurate assessment of your Emotional Intelligence capabilities, enabling you to create meaningful Personal Development Plans (PDPs) that support growth in Emotional Intelligence.

Not yet. We recognise the importance of making our e-Factor® assessment tool accessible to people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, we plan to translate our assessment tool into other languages soon. To ensure that the standard is maintained in territories where English isn’t the first language, we will partner with professionals who can provide high-quality translations. We believe that Emotional Intelligence is a fundamental human skill that everyone should have the opportunity to develop, and we will continue to work diligently to achieve this goal.

The objective test of the e-Factor® assessment tool consists of 160 items. Completing the objective test usually takes a maximum of around 45 minutes. This test measures the individual’s Emotional Intelligence capabilities across 12 competencies, providing a comprehensive and accurate assessment of their EI skills. We are committed to ensuring that our e-Factor® assessment tool meets the highest standards of quality and accuracy, and the inclusion of 160 items in the objective test enables us to achieve this goal.

The KUSA (final) element of the e-Factor® assessment tool will have time limits on each question. This approach is based on research that reminds us that some tests can be subject to manipulation, which can make them unreliable. Human interactions, especially high-stake ones, rely on spontaneous responses, and it is not always practical or feasible to research the answer during difficult conversations, conflict situations, or relationship interactions. Therefore, we have built-in sufficient time for users to understand the questions and options to make an informed response but not enough time for users to conduct in-depth research. We time-limit each question to ensure that users who struggle to choose the appropriate responses do not get stuck on one question and end up missing the last chunk of questions.  Our goal is to create a sensible balance between standardisation and open access, though we will do everything possible to enhance access in time. We will respond to any specific request to make the instrument accessible to as many people as possible.

We have developed the e-Factor® assessment tool based on research with adults, and it would be irresponsible to apply it to children and adolescents. Therefore, we cannot support the use of the e-Factor® assessment tool with children. However, we are working on a children’s model and assessment methodology in parallel, and our ultimate goal is to make Emotional Intelligence accessible to the 4-9-year-old demographic. We believe that the prevention of emotional skill problems in children is much more humane and simpler than relying on prisons and increased mental health care demand.
