Contempt is debatably the most destructive of the 7 universal facial expressions. It often appears on the face when a person feels moral superiority over another – be that political, ethical, hierarchical, or intelligence, to name a few. It’s an incredibly toxic emotion and can be very painful for the receiver of contempt. On the other hand, the person showing contempt may feel good about themselves, as they see themselves as superior to the person they are showing contempt; however, is any feeling of superiority healthy?
